Kyojuro Rengoku is one of the most powerful and beloved characters in the manga and anime series Demon Slayer. Demon Slayer is the story of a man named Tanjiro Kamado, whose family was massacred by demons, and his sister turned into a demon herself. Since that day, Tanjiro vowed to kill every demon and made it his life mission.

The anime has become increasingly popular with both hardcore and new anime fans all over the world and Kyojuro Rengoku is one of the reasons why. In this article, we will try to focus on this deuteragonist of the Demon Slayer anime series to show why he is almost as popular as the protagonist Tanjiro.

1. Kyojuro Rengoku Family

To know who the real Kyojuro Rengoku is, one must first go back to his origins as a person. You see Kyojuro was into a family with a storied history of Demon Slayers. He was born with special abilities like insane physical and mental strength. He follows in his father’s footsteps in becoming a Flame Hashira and is adored by his younger brother, Senjuro.

  • Shinjuro Rengoku

Shinjuro is the Rengoku patriarch. A former Flame Breather Hashira himself, he sometimes takes it too far with how he relishes his former glory. As he retired from being a Demon Slayer, he became abusive and turned to alcohol. He was a bit too hard on his children and this built resentment among his children towards him. Eventually, he comes around regrets his harsh ways, and vows never again to bring shame to the Rengoku name.

  • Ruka Rengoku

Ruka is Kyojuro’s mother who fell ill and passed away due to an unknown disease after giving birth to his younger brother Senjuro. She was a great influence on him being a real man. Her gentle nature and constant reminders of how special people with gifts and abilities should use them to help and protect other people, and not abuse or hurt them. Kyojuro never forgets her advice and it molds him into the honorable hero he grows up to be. This is most reminiscent of Kyojuro’s final moments before his death, where he has flashbacks of conversations with his mother.

  • Kyojuro Rengoku

The eldest child of Shinjuro and Ruka Rengoku, Kyojuro was born with skills and strength not natural to any mere mortal. He was destined to become a Flame Hashira and fulfill his family’s legacy. He is an honorable person all around and is somewhat resentful of his father’s harsh treatment of him and his brother, Senjuro. He always looks out for his brother and misses the tenderness of his sweet mother, Ruka.

  • Senjuro Rengoku

Senjuro is Kyojuro’s younger brother who looks up to him. He is devastated after his older brother’s demise but slowly recovers after listening to Tanjiro. He believes he has disappointed his family by not becoming a Flame Hashira, much less a Demon Slayer Corps member. Deep inside he is happy knowing that Kyojuro would understand.

The Rengoku bloodline has a storied history when it comes to Demon Slayers. His father Shinjuro, was a former Flame Hashira himself and was one of the best Hashiras at the time. This put a lot of pressure on Kyojuro and Senjuro in following the family tradition, but where Kyojuro exceeded those expectations, Senjuro seemed to fall short.

In the Demon Slayer Corps, fighting techniques are classified as “breathing techniques“. Kyojuro The Flame Hashira has 6 forms with differing levels of execution. The Demon Slayer Corps is an organization whose only mission is to protect humanity from the demons plaguing the earth. It functions like a paramilitary force that has different chapters in different areas. They also have special tiers of members which are based on their fighting abilities. If you wanted to join the Demon Slayer Corps and wanted to move up the ranks, you have to go through another round of rigorous training to be considered for the elite, Hashira.

Kyojuro Rengoku is a member of the “Hashira” meaning “pillar”. They are the most elite of the elite fighters of the Demon Slayer Corps, an organization whose sole mission is to eliminate the earth of the demons that plague it. Kyojuro is called the “Flame Hashira” due to his Breathing Style – something that fighting techniques in this universe are based. Kyojuro’s Flame Breathing techniques are feared by demons for their lethal effects.

Muzan Kibutsuji is the Anime’s main antagonist and is the original Demon who has spawned and infected all demons in existence. He was first born into the world as a very weak child with a small chance of living a long life due to illnesses. This prompted his doctors to try out some secret medication involving the Blue Spider Lily which cures him but then turned him into a powerful, flesh-eating demon who cannot survive in sunlight. This treatment only takes effect only after Muzan kills his doctors after being frustrated with impatience with its efficacy.

He eventually can turn people into demons themselves by infusing his blood into them and becomes ruler of a flesh-eating demon army. His primary goal is to obtain the Blue Spider Lily and continue his treatment to be able to transcend the demonic limitations of not being able to survive sunlight.

The 12 Kizuki

This army of demons works under Muzan’s orders and regularly consumes and toys with humans as they see fit. Their fighting technique is called the Demon Arts and they are the sworn enemies of the Demon Slayer Corps. The Kizuki is the equivalent elite fighting force of the demon horde. Demons have tiers called “ranks” – there are lower rank and upper rank for each tier. So if you belong to a lower rank and score a 6 (the lowest), that makes you weak. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train

The Mugen Train is a massive train that is seemingly never-ending. It is operated by the Demon Slayer Corps and travels through a demon-infested realm. The train is first introduced in the anime series when Tanjiro Kamado, the main protagonist, and his sister Nezuko Kamado, are aboard the train, heading to their final destination. On the train, they are attacked by a group of demons, who is eventually killed by the Demon Slayer Corps.

However, during the battle, Kyojuro Rengoku, the Flame Hashira, or Pillar, of the Demon Slayer Corps, is killed. This event sets in motion the events of the Mugen Train arc, in which Tanjiro and his friends attempt to avenge Kyojuro’s death and prevent the demons from escaping the train. The Mugen Train is a pivotal location in the Demon Slayer anime series and is the central focus of the Mugen Train arc.

Kyojuro vs Akaza

The battle between Kyojuro and Akaza lasted very long and both were pretty evenly matched at first. Slowly Akaza started to show his demonic invulnerability to flesh wounds and kept regenerating his wounds and limbs. This eventually became too much to endure for Kyojuro, who despite the fatigue and mortal wounds, kept fighting on sheer willpower and was almost able to decapitate Akaza at some point. Even his 6th and most powerful Flame Breathing Technique, the “Rengoku” was not enough to put away the fiercely powerful demon Akaza. He died of the multiple wounds inflicted by Akaza, and the worst was the punch to the solar plexus that went straight through his body.

4. Kyojuro Rengoku Death

Kyojuro’s death was taken very badly by everyone. He was a great and honorable member of the Demon Slayer Corps who lived strongly based on his pure principles. His father, brother, the Hashira’s, and Tanjiro – all respected him truly whether they showed it or not. He fought till the last ounce of his blood, never succumbing to the constant temptations by Akaza to join them in becoming immortal demons. He protected everybody on that train till his dying breath.

Fans all over the world who watched the Mugen Train movie wept as Tanjiro wailed at how the true winner was Kyojuro, that humans were fighting at a disadvantage, and how demons were the cowards. The scene where Kyojuro talks calmly to Tanjiro just before dying is one of the most brutally heartbreaking scenes in anime history.

After the death of Kyojuro, his father Shinjiro realizes his abusive ways and decides to give Kyojuro’s weapon, the Fiery Sword Hilt to Tanjiro. This is probably because he saw how Kyojuro and Tanjiro were similar in many ways, and that it was only proper he get the sword to use in avenging his death.
