How many Shrek movies are there? The Shrek film series and franchise are possibly one of the most memorable pop culture franchises of the early 2000s. In fact, it was preserved in the National Film Registry for its groundbreaking impact on the world of animation. With a star-studded cast and intelligent humor aimed at both kids and adults, the series has cemented its status as an iconic piece of media by making history time and time again. In fact, the three sequels following the first Shrek film have earned a combined total of over $2 billion in worldwide gross. The name Shrek was constantly misspelled as Sherek by many but it did make Shrek a lot more lovable and unique as time went by.
The history behind the first Shrek film is quite fascinating. It was considered DreamWorks animation’s first big hit and established as an animation studio to watch out for. Shrek went on to outgross any other film in its opening weekend. It also surpassed The Lion King as the highest-grossing animated film in Australia. The film’s soundtrack album reached #28 on the Billboard 200 chart, selling over two million copies in the United States alone. Furthermore, it is notable for winning the very first Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
In 2008, Shrek The Musical opened on Broadway. There are also several short films and a handful of television specials in the franchise. Needless to say, Shrek has been a valuable and lucrative IP for DreamWorks Animation.
Here we will give you some information about how many movies are there, Shrek movies in order, where to watch them all, and even movies like Shrek. Let’s begin!
How Many Shrek Movies Are There?
As previously mentioned, Shrek was followed by numerous sequels: Shrek 2, Shrek the Third, and Shrek Forever After. A spinoff series, 2011’s Puss in Boots, will be followed by Puss in Boots: The Last Wish later this year. The Adventures of Puss in Boots released episodes on Netflix from 2015 to 2018. So all in all it would be around 4 for the main Shrek movies and a couple of spinoff movies and series from Puss in Boots.

Shrek is a 2001 American computer-animated fantasy romantic comedy film directed by Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson in their directorial debut. It is loosely based on William Steig’s 1990 fairy tale picture book Shrek!, and serves as a parody film, targeting other films adapted from numerous children’s fantasies (mainly Disney films).
Shrek Cast (Voices)
It features the voices of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, and John Lithgow.
Shrek Character List
Shrek, Donkey, Princess Fiona, and Lord Farquaad, respectively.
Shrek, the titular hero, is an ogre who enjoys living alone in his Shrek swamp. However, his solitude is disturbed when Lord Farquaad sends magical creatures to his property. In order for the creatures to be relocated, Shrek must rescue and deliver Princess Fiona, whom Lord Farquaad wishes to marry. However, things get complicated when Shrek begins falling for her. Shrek is grumpy but Fiona eventually sees things from his point of view, like almost life cursed Shrek to loneliness.
Shrek is a charming, original tale that pokes fun at itself and your usual fairytale trope. In this movie, you won’t find any of the cliches that are in a lot of Disney films. Instead, it’s a story starring unconventional creatures who teach us that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The soundtrack is also memorable for its use of “All-Star” by Smash Mouth, “Hallelujah” by Rufus Wainwright, and “I’m a Believer” by Smash Mouth.
Where Can I Watch Shrek? Is Shrek On Netflix?
For now, Shrek and Shrek 2 are the only ones streamable and only on Hulu. But you can also rent or buy at Amazon Prime Video since it’s already removed from Netflix a couple of months ago.
Shrek 2 (2004)
After returning from their honeymoon and meeting Donkey in the Shrek swamp, Shrek and Fiona receive an invitation to visit Far Far Away, where they meet Fiona’s parents, King Harold and Queen Lillian, the Fairy Godmother, and her son Prince Charming. The Fairy Godmother tries to break up Shrek’s marriage by making Fiona fall in love with Prince Charming.
Shrek and Donkey then go on a mission to steal a potion from the Fairy Godmother to make Shrek handsome enough for Fiona. Along the way, they meet Puss in Boots, who joins the duo in their quest. In the ogre’s absence, the Fairy Godmother has Prince Charming pose as Shrek. Afterward, Fiona tells Shrek she loves him just the way he is before they both return to ogre form. Princess Fiona is now officially, the Shrek Wife.
It’s not often that sequels live up to their predecessors, but Shrek 2 is a shining example of a sequel being as funny and imaginative as the one that came before it. This is also the first film that introduces the charming Puss in Boots, who would go on to get a spinoff of his own. Also, who could forget the Fairy Godmother’s iconic rendition of “Holding Out For a Hero”?
Shrek 2 Cast (Voices)
It features the voices of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, Julie Andrews, Antonio Banderas, John Cleese

Shrek the Third (2007)
The story of Shrek the Third begins in Far, Far Away, upon the death of King Harold. With no one to inherit the throne, Shrek, Donkey, and Puss in Boots must set out to locate Artie Pendragon, Fiona’s cousin who is eligible to take over the kingdom. Before embarking on the quest, Shrek finds out that his wife Fiona is pregnant with triplets.
Prince Charming, seeking to avenge the death of his mother, seeks to claim the throne for himself. He stages a takeover at the castle while Shrek is on the trip, locking away Fiona, Queen Lillian, and the other princesses of Far Far Away. Thankfully, Artie and Shrek are able to defeat Prince Charming and his pirates.
Shrek the Third, while not being as revolutionary as the first two films, is still an entertaining addition to the beloved franchise. It’s understandable given the cultural impact of movies like Shrek. It’s still full of whip-smart jokes, pop culture references, and the characters we have come to love.
This film also works on expanding the lore of Far Far Away, as well as adding more characters to the franchise. The film also features an even more star-studded cast, with Justin Timberlake voicing Artie Pendragon and several notable figures in comedy like Maya Rudolph and Seth Rogen making cameos.

Shrek Forever After (2010)
In Shrek Forever After, Shrek has found his true calling as a family ogre and local hero, though a part of him misses the days when he was just a solitary ogre. When he’s duped into signing a pact with smooth-talking dealmaker Rumpelstiltskin, he finds himself in an alternate reality where ogres are hunted, Rumplestiltskin is king, Puss is obese, and Fiona is a fugitive who has lost faith in love.
In a race against time, Shrek has until the end of the day to get his “true love’s kiss” which will undo the alternate timeline. Thankfully, Fiona falls in love with him and kisses him before he fades from existence. This sends him back to his real timeline, where he learns to appreciate his family and friends.
The beauty of Shrek Forever After is that we already know these characters and have met them before. The storyline might be simple but it works well with this movie. The humor is definitely there too, so you will laugh while watching it. It serves as a pleasant opportunity to revisit these characters. The story is not anything original, but still better than the previous installment.

Will There Be A Shrek 5?
I’m afraid Shrek 5 has been canceled for now. But its legions of fans are just begging for more and if there’s one thing true about Hollywood, there’s always a way when there’s money to be made.
Movies Like Shrek
Puss in Boots and Puss In Boots: The Last Wish will be most similar to Shrek movies simply because the same people are behind them. Plus a lot of the characters do cameos in these movies.
Though Shrek Forever After was originally planned to be the final film in the series, there are talks of a fifth and final installment in the Shrek franchise being in the works. The latest update was in 2017, with screenwriter Michael McCullers saying that the fifth Shrek film will include a huge reinvention of the series.
Over a decade has passed since the last Shrek film, so it might be too late to restore the franchise to its former glory. Still, many Shrek fans remain hopeful that the untitled Shrek project will provide a proper send-off for these beloved characters. With so many spinoffs, musicals, and movies, it’s really difficult to say just how many Shrek movies are there really.
